Responsibilities of a Retail Manager

There are many responsibilities associated with becoming a retail manager. You will need to show proficiency in managerial areas as well as demonstrate your expertise in your decision making process. Management trainee programs will prepare you for what it will be like to become a retail manager. As store manager, you will need to have great communication skills as well as develop the ability to assume the role of any position in the store.

Your job as a retail manager may also involve keeping the peace and promoting excellence for each one of your employees.

There are certain skill requirements which are needed to excel in this position. For one, you need to be able to effectively communicate with employees, customers, and other managers. You should also be proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You should also speak the primary language of your store fluently. Retail managers have an uncanny ability to solve problems, multi-task, and are typically very organized. You should also be able to work well under pressure and be able to meet tough deadlines.

Physical Requirements

Store managers are usually very active. More times than not, a typically day will involve climbing, kneeling, walking, standing, and stooping. Despite what others believe, this position requires quite a bit of physical exertion. You should also be able to lift up to seventy five pounds as you may end up receiving and putting away shipments. This is also crucial if you are delivering a large piece of equipment to the front of the store for the customer. As retail manager, be ready to work late nights, early morning, and weekends. In some cases, you'll even have to work holidays. If your store happens to contain or sell alcohol then you will need to be at least 21-years old to manage there. Finally, make sure that you have the ability to quickly adapt to certain situations and be able to solve problems on the fly. As you become more involved in this career, you will come to realize why all of these skills are important.

Earnings and Benefits Potential

You can easily make around $18,000 per year as a retail manager. However, some more experienced manager is able to make about $49,000 per year. Where you are located and your amount of experience directly correlates with how big your monthly check will be. In most cases, retail manager also receive paid vacations, sick pay, a 401K, and even medical and dental coverage.
