Program Description

It is important to note that the primary difference between these three educational paths is the time that it will take you to complete them. For instance, while a degree program will typically be obtained from a traditional four year college or university, a diploma program is generally completed at a clinical school. In addition, while a formal degree program (whether it be an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree program) will mostly consist of classroom based instruction, a diploma program is more likely to consist of half instructional courses and half hands-on laboratory classes. Generally speaking, you can expect it to take you about two years to complete the requirements of a diploma based program. In addition, because of the nature of a diploma based program you may find that they are taught in a setting that offers specialty type programs. For instance, if you have completed your associate’s degree or your bachelor’s degree in an area of nursing, you may have the opportunity to complete a diploma program at the hospital. Ideally, a diploma program is intended to provide you with additional relevant training that specifically applies to your current occupation. With that in mind, it is important to note that most diploma programs will require that you have already completed some level of formal training before you will be admitted.

While a traditional degree program, such as an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree, will provide you with a balanced curriculum that will result in you having a well-rounded educational experience, a diploma program has a different set of goals. The primary purpose of a diploma program is to provide students who already have some career specific training with an additional opportunity to learn a new skill that will benefit them in the work place. It is important to understand that diploma programs are not only offered in the medical field; in fact, many business-related occupations offer diploma programs that will help you build your resume and help you increase your marketability in the work force. It will likely be a good idea to check into possible diploma programs that are available for you to pursue. For instance, you will want to know if any programs are offered near you, are there any diploma programs that apply to your field of study, and if you complete any diploma programs in an online format. Lastly, don’t think of a diploma based program like a degree program. Instead, think of it as an add-on to your degree; there really isn’t a limit as to how many diploma programs you can complete.
