Program Description

In order to become a massage therapist, there are a few basic attributes that will be most helpful in the work place. First, you need to be comfortable within intimate settings. As a massage therapist, your clients are often in a very limited amount of clothing. It is important that you are not only comfortable with this situation, but that you also make your client feel comfortable. Keep in mind, a large portion of a massage therapist's success comes from positive word of mouth referrals and repeat clients. It is also important that you can accurately convey your desire for people to feel good about themselves.

Massage Therapy Course

To become a massage therapist, you will need to obtain specific training and a license. Licensing requirements vary greatly depending on your state of residence. In fact, requirements can also be different from one jurisdiction to another within the same state. Some states even have different requirements based on your area of massage therapy specialty. Generally speaking, most schools teach their massage therapy students the basic Swedish style massage. In addition to this particular style, students will then elect which specialty area they most want to pursue. As a student, you can choose to specialize in clinical massage, sports massage, or even animal massage. Should you decide to choose clinical (or medical) massage as your specialty you will need an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology. This is due to the fact that you will mainly be working with individuals who need massage as a form of rehabilitation from some type of injury. It is important to note that a specialty area is not mandatory; some students choose to simply focus on the Swedish massage. Of course, your area of expertise will greatly dictate the type of setting you will be working in. For example, if you specialize in sports massage you may obtain a massage therapist job for a sports team, in a hospital, or at a sports medicine clinic.

In order to begin your work as a massage therapist you will need to complete your classroom training and practice. Most states require 500 - 600 hours before they consider a student prepared for employment. Upon completing these classroom and practice hours, a student can also choose to take the state board certification exam. While this is not required, it often makes finding a job much easier. It also makes a job candidate more appealing to the potential employer. Occasionally, some agencies or companies offer apprenticeships. In a situation where a student is able to secure one such apprenticeship, he or she would not have to complete the classroom training and practice requirements.
