Medical Laboratory Technician Training

To become a lab technician, you must obtain a national certification, which is offered after completion of the national certification exam. This exam is offered by the ASCP or the American Society for Clinical Pathology. You will also need to specialize with many areas that can help you when you are ready to join the work force. It does this by enabling you to get experience in the specific area. One must be comfortable with the idea of working close to blood and other bodily fluids. This is normally the main function of this job, so you will need to be able to relax when handling these materials. Finally, you must possess very excellent analytical skills since medical laboratory technicians require the ability to analyze different types of tests and results to make sure that the tests have been completed properly.

A lab technician may work in various types of laboratories, including chemical, medical, dental and forensic labs. Regardless of what sort of laboratory technician one decides to be, an aptitude for science becomes one of the largest prerequisites. Taking into account the time that it takes to earn a degree, and inputting time for the necessary tests and certifications, being qualified to become a laboratory technician can take from about two and a half to four and a half years after graduating from high school. You have to also take into account the fact that tests are given only at various times of the year, depending on the job market in your area.

A laboratory technician is also required to be certified by the professional association: American Medical Technologists. To get certified, the potential laboratory technician has to pass an exam that proves his expertise. To obtain this certificate, one has to download the exam application from the national certification agency website at: amt1.com. Choose the link "certification" and then choose "medical lab technician, then "apply for certification." You will click the given links to download the application and the "candidate handbook". You must then read the handbook thoroughly before filling in your downloaded application.

The next step is to fill out the application providing all the information requested, in order to prevent a delay during the processing time. This includes copies of school transcripts and a specified application fee. The application to test fee is about $130. After finishing, mail the application to the specific address provided on the application. Next, schedule your certification test date immediately upon receiving the letter confirming the application approval. Study for your exam while you wait for the exam date. Finally, take the exam and then wait for the written test results via your mail only. The tests prove that you are capable of working in a high stress environment.
