Personal Training Certification Schools

A personal trainer is a fitness professional involved in exercise prescription and instruction. They achieve this by motivating clients in setting goals and providing feedback or accountability to clients. They also measure their client's strengths and weaknesses with fitness assessments that are performed before and after an exercise program to measure their client's improvements in physical fitness. The career involves developing exercise prescription plans for aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, or flexibility training. Personal trainers may also be involved in the prescription of stretching routines or other approaches. They discuss nutrition, ergogenic supplementation, and related practices. Program Description

Qualification standards for personal trainers vary between countries. In the US a number of certifications are available. One is cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) diploma which deals with the emergency procedure that is performed in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person in cardiac arrest. Another is automated external defibrillator (AED) certification which indicates an ability to diagnose potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, through defibrillation. To become a personal fitness trainer, first think and decide if you have what it takes. You should be analytical, patient, nurturing, persistent, and organized, an effective motivator and very importantly, a good listener.

You should also decide on the Certification which you will undertake. Take some time to research the websites of major organizations to find out which would best suit you. Some accredited and well-known certification organizations are: the American College of Sports Medicine, American Council on Exercise, Aerobics and Fitness Association of America and American Fitness Professionals and Associates. Others are: International Fitness Professionals Association, International Sports & Sciences Association, National Academy of Sports Medicine and National Council on Strength and Fitness. The cost will depend on the study option chosen but it would range from $349 to $549. One major pre-requisite is that you must be 18 years old and have current CPR/AED certification.

Another factor in becoming a personal fitness trainer is that you choose a specialty. Note that this is a competitive market and many fitness trainers are boosting their resumes by obtaining specialty certifications. For example, you could undertake an ACE's Clinical Exercise Specialist certification, which takes you beyond basic personal training. It allows you to work with special populations such as those with chronic diseases or injuries. You can then start by getting a job at a club where you could improve your skills and education. In order to be successful, offer free consultations and seminars as this is a good way to become known. You could then try setting up your own business and continue marketing yourself.

Never rest on your laurels as being successful at this job takes work, talent, skill and experience. You should look for ways of becoming indispensable to your clients. Attending personal trainer summits, workshops and seminars or consider joining a national organization such as IDEA. You could also pursue such options as venturing into corporate fitness, cruises, resorts, spas, online training and more. You could even go further and consider consulting, fitness writing, athletic coaching (with the proper education), and offering group fitness instruction.
