Two Types of Public Relations Careers

There are many ways to enter this field and several different ways to define the characteristics of public relations professionals. For the sake of this article, we are going to speak about the two main career paths people generally take. The first one is a public relations officer. Basically, this is someone who would be required to have top-notch communication skills and the ability to make people perceive certain events differently. Public relations offers would be in charge of maintaining the image of their client. While this may sound like a simple job, the truth is that this career is very challenging and carries a lot of responsibility. In some cases, you may be the one person responsible for saving the image of a popular political campaigner. Failing to perform effectively would result in having your clients reputation destroyed. Ultimately, this would diminish your chances of receiving future work from other clients.

Public Relations Specialist

A public relations specialist is someone whose job description matches that of a public relations officer very closely. The only difference between a specialist and an officer is that the first is responsible for encouraging an audience to perceive a client a certain way. Basically, you would be taking a more proactive approach towards maintaining their positive public image. While it isn't always the case, public relations specialists usually represent larger companies and corporations (especially those who pride themselves on keeping a certain image). Clients and companies may not have a clear understanding about how the public perceives them so it is your job to advise them to act a certain way. A public relations representative must be able to control the behaviors and actions of a client and prevent them from doing anything which would hinder their image. Sometimes you will be responsible for holding back their destructive behavior (if applicable). This is a challenging and very rewarding career which offers plenty of advancement and pay opportunities. This statement holds more merit if you are working successfully with your current clients.
