Duties and Responsibilities

Early childhood educators formulate their lessons based on the ages of their children. In general, they teach in a very fun manner and provide many hands-on projects and activities. This is often the best way for younger children to learn. You will use books, films, music, and computers to instill knowledge and other core skillsets into your classes. You have to teach in such a way that the child is having fun.

This is generally done by allowing them to play as well as learn. For example, early childhood educators provide their classes with problem-solving materials which including puzzles, clay, and building blocks. To promote social skills, educators may have children work in a cooperative setting by having them prepare meals and learn musical instruments. All of this is crucial to the child's development as they get older.

Early Childhood Education Degrees

Reading is such a huge part in any child's life. It will be your duty to expose them to certain books as well as tell them stories. These stories can be fictional or non-fictional. You will also help them explore their creative capabilities by helping them write poems, build crafts, and even construct their own stories. To succeed in this career, you need to be very patient. Not all children are fast learners so you will need to take your time with each and every one of them.

You also need to have great communication skills. Maintaining the attention of a child is no easy task and you will need to help them maintain focus by using a variety of different techniques. This is a career which will provide you with a steady foundation of what it is like to teach young children. As a result, you will have the knowledge and experience needed to move on to older children. Some early childhood educators end up going on to become middle school and high school teachers as well as college professors.

Compensation and Benefits

Your salary will be directly correlated with your experience and where you are employed. In general, the average early childhood educator earns between $47,000 and $50,000 per year. The average hourly rate is about $9 per hour. Remember that this is a job that is going to offer a lot of variability in terms of the situations you will face.

Children can be very unpredictable and handling them can be tough. In order to become certified for this position, you need a teaching certificate and in some cases, a formal degrees. As with most academic institutions, a background check will be conducted to make sure that it is safe for you to work with children on a daily basis.
