An ESL teacher usually works at an elementary school or at an adult education center where they teach English to individual students or classes who need help learning the language. In some cases, becoming an ESL teacher involves taking on extra training so that you can learn the skills required for teaching people how to learn your language. Most ESL teachers are paid on an hourly basis and work part-time. On average, you can expect to earn about $23 per hour teaching students English. If you are fortunate enough to receive a full-time position, then you can expect to earn about $50,000 per year. Your salary will be directly correlated with where you live, how much experience you have, and the location of where the immigrants are from.

On average, someone who is just starting out in this career path will probably end up making about $32,000 per year. With more and more immigrants entering the United States, job growth is expect to grow by a huge margin so you should have no trouble finding work after you become certified. The number of positions available is supposed to increase by 15% by the year 2018.

To teach a second language in the United States, you need to have at least a Bachelor's degree at the minimum. An ESL certification is also required.
