Program Description

Although a graduate level degree is not required to be able to work in this industry, by obtaining this level of education you are sure to be more marketable and more likely to stand out against fellow job seekers. In addition, a graduate level degree will make it possible for you to secure upper level positions in the healthcare industry. For instance, you could focus your studies in business administration, which would allow you to work in an administrative capacity within the healthcare industry. Since this degree program is meant to prepare you for a leadership role, you can expect a significant portion of your coursework to be centered on management principles. Or, you could complete a Master of Science degree program with an emphasis in nursing. This would prepare you for supervisory positions within the nursing sector. In this degree program you will be focusing your studies on health assessment, the theories of nursing, and advanced practical nursing. Keep in mind, your specific coursework may vary some depending upon your area of concentration. Another option would be to obtain a Master of Science degree with a concentration as a physician assistant. In this capacity you would be expected to work with patients to assess, diagnose, and treat their situation under the direct supervision of a licensed physician. Although specific job responsibilities vary from one position to another, you may be expected to order laboratory work or diagnostic testing, to question the patient in order to obtain an accurate medical history, to develop an appropriate treatment plan, and to prescribe medication. Within a degree program in this specialty area you can expect to take courses such as health promotion, epidemiology, behavioral science, and disease prevention.

Of course, before you can begin working on a graduate level degree you will first need to complete an undergraduate program in a related area. Keep in mind, it is completely feasible to complete an undergraduate program and to decide not to further your level of education; your work opportunities are still likely to be plentiful. Generally speaking, an undergraduate degree program will cover topics similar to that of a graduate level degree, but at a less intensive level of study. For example, in a very short period of time you can complete an associate's level degree that will allow you to work as a licensed practical nurse, as a radiologic technician, as a cardiovascular technician, or in dietetics. Keep in mind, in each of these professions it will be possible for you to begin working and to then further your educational degree while maintaining your employment.
