Biomedical Science School Information

A biomedical scientist is someone who focuses on one or two particular areas. Their work is usually based in a lab and they use innovative medical equipment to test and conduct research on a variety of testing subjects. Their discoveries are then relayed to medical specialists and other physicians so that they can diagnose their patients more efficiently and provide a cure. To put simply, a biomedical scientist is one the main contributors to the overall health-treatment cycle.

As a biomedical scientist, you'll spend most of your time in a lab. However, there is also the opportunity to become employed for other organizations like public hospitals, academic institutions, and even forensic labs. Where you become employed will determine your pay, work hours, and advancement opportunities.

Working Conditions

Depending on where you are employed, your work hours will dramatically vary. Those who are employed in hospitals usually work shifts while those working in labs have different schedules. In general, a biomedical scientist is someone who receives a small amount of patient interaction. However, there are certain cases where you might be spending a large majority of your time with patients- with other people on a medical team. Also realize, unless you have the correct qualifications, you are not allowed to issue medical advice.

Entry-Level Positions

The most basic level of education that you will need in order to become a biomedical scientist is a Certificate of Competence. This is usually awarded by the IBMS (Institute of Biomedical Science). Students also have the option of working on their undergraduate degree as well as their IBMS certificate at the same time. This saves a lot of time and allows them to receive a position directly out of grad school. It is also recommended that you receive hands-on training as this will look more attractive to potential employers.

Training and Advancement Opportunities

The IBMS provides formal training as well as a large amount of time spent in the field. This allows you to master the skills required to become a biomedical scientist. As you progress in this field, your advancement opportunities will depend heavily on your experience as well as your ability to pass relevant examinations. This is a career with plenty of advancement opportunities as well as the option of working for a firm and starting your own private practice.
